Winter in Alaska

Alaska is a picturesque beautiful place. I could never get tired of living here. The winters are something less to be desired, but after a short time away from the frigid cold misery, something inside draws me back. The salt water, the landscape, the freedom is something I can not possibly live without. I am looking forward to this spring. We have so many fun exciting adventures planned. Our first stop is going to be in Sitka, Alaska this spring. We are going to be touring the Russian Capitol and talking about the Native traditions along with filming the exciting Herring Fishery and going a little sport fishing for spirng steelhead in some remote lakes. Thanksgiving Day Rescue

Hi All,

We got a distress call Thanksgiving evening. Two guys out deer hunting anchored up their boat and went to shore in their raft to go deer hunting. While they were hunting their boat drug anchor and bashed up on the rocks and sank. When they got back to shore from getting their deer they went out to their sinking boat and salvaged most of their gear and a VHF raido. They said they would be O.K. and build a fire and be ready at daybreak. So day after Thanksgiving we headed out and got their GPS coordinates and located them by theor flairs and fire. They were fine and had 2 deer. We loaded their gear and gave them a ride to the dock. Come to find out they are Coast Guard guys! They are helicopter pilots for the Kodiak Station Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter. They said they were probably never going to live this down. At least they did not have to be rescued by the official Helicopter! Well hope you all had a good Thanksgiving Holiday.

Thanksgiving Day

Hi All,

We got invited to our friends 110 ft live aboard research vessel for Thanksgiving. We had Turkey, Stuffing and all the trimmings. We even had Wild Goose and some Wild Duck. It was a fantastic dinner! We watched football, they have a satellite TV dish on their vessel! We have been busy working and had a very nice holiday. We hope you all had a nice holiday and we are back to work trying to keep up on our firewood pile. The day of Thanksgiving we got a distress call from some guys that were out deer hunting. They anchored their boat offshore and when they went to the beach to go hunting their anchor drug and their boat bashed up on the rocks and sank. They had supplies and built a fire. The next morning George and the Captain went out in a landing craft and rescued them. Come to find out they were Coast Guard Guys! They said they were going to get a ration for having to be rescued, well it is a lot less embarrasing than being rescued by the official Coast Guard Helicopter! Hi All,

Here is a nice picture I took that I would like to share with you. We have been helping our friend with a survey on their 33 acre parcel of property in Kodiak. We have been camping out for the past few days. This is the view of where one of the cabins are being built. We saw a Humpback Whale today. We have been in a different part of Alaska this part of the year usually in Southeast Alaska. In Southeast Alaska the Whales hang out on the Lost Coast (area between Cordova and Yakutat) during the Spring and Summer and they usually leave around the end of August. Seeing a Humpback whale this late in Alaska is surprising to us, at least. We would like to study the migration a lot more. We did a lot of studies with researchers in Alaska and would like to continue our research in this area. It is interesting to know that we can watch the Whales in this area all the way in to November. We saw as many as 45-60 Humpback Whales at different times in the months of October and November.
