Fish for the Freezer

Here is the stringer of fish we got yesterday near Whale pass. While fishing we saw a bunch of Whales. I had no idea whales were in Alaska this late. I thought they go to mexico and Hawaii about now. Whales are very smart, them heading for the warm climate is a very smart thing to do. Alaska winters can be brutal. It is rainy and cold and I do not even want to venture outside. George went and braved to bone chilling rain to get some firewood to keep us warm. Thank goodness.

DEER BUTCHERING DAY

I butchered the deer today. This is the end product. About of 50 pounds of meat. We have deer roasts, stir fry meat and stew meat. We need to get more to fill our freezer.

WORK DAY

We went and set out our subsistance halibut skate hoping to hit the jackpot. We need to put up fish for the winter. We got some salmon and deer, but it would be nice to have a pile of halibut to fill our freezer. When we set out our skate of 30 hooks we searched the beaches for fire wood. We are burning 2 woodstoves and need to supply up on firewood to keep us warm. This is about a cord of firewood.

Going to town

We tried to go to town a few days ago but the last storm we had it rained so hard that it washed out the bridge that we need to cross to get there. From the boat landing where we tie up it is about 20 miles to get to Kodiak. Of course the day I forgot my camera something out of the ordinary happens I would have liked to share a picture with you of what that wash out looked like. So we found out by an air taxi pilot that the bridge was fixed. Thank goodness, we have not been to town for over 2 weeks. Normally that would not be a problem, but we are nearly out of fresh supplies and a few creature comforts. When you live in the bush people need their creature comforts or it makes living in the remote wilderness difficult sometimes.

In Icy Bay we had the luxury of having an EAS (Essential Air Service) plane that flies near our cabin a few times a week to bring us mail and supplies. Here you just simply go without if you are not stocked up. We do not exactly have a 7/11 down the street. Once I get supplied up I can stay comfortably out in the wildernesss for literally months at a time. As long as I have internet! I have lived in the past for months at a time out in remote locations with nothing but a Marine VHS raido and an AM raido that played at night. That was before I got spoiled on Sat internet. i used to have Satellite TV, but the reciever burned up and we could not get a service tech out to fix it so we just go without. There is plenty of news online. We also use Skype and Vonage to stay in touch with the world. Life is good, going to town, YEA!

George went deer hunting today. He was successful! We need to add to our supply of Halibut, Salmon and Crab to our freezer to have enough food to get us through the tough Alaskan winter. Alaskan residents are allowed 4 deer per person. This will be a good winter if we can get more deer to add to this one. When we get more deer I will be able to make my own burger and sausage. It is the best organic meat you could ask for. Free range meat! Looking forward to a deer roast!
